
Cheyech, Njuguna scoop millions after winning Iten International Marathon

Njuguna is glad to to have won his first marathon in as many attempts
Seasoned long distance runner Flomena Cheyech and Simon Njuguna are the winners of the 2025 Iten International Marathon.
The two clinched top honours in the Mozzart Bet-powered race, that was held on Sunday morning in Elgeyo Marakwet.

Cheyech, running in her second marathon since making return from close to three and half years break, clocked 2:32:11 to bag her first win of the year.
The 2017 Paris Marathon bronze medalist, finished ahead of Suzzy Chebet who timed 2:34:34, with Irene Jeruto closing in the podium places after clocking 2:35:19.
Njuguna, on the other hand, saved his best for the last, summoning his energy in the final stretch of to out-kick the rest for gold in 2:12:09.
Edwin Tuitoek was second in 2:12:31, with Dennis Kibiwott and finishing the third after timing 2:12:34.
For Cheyech, winning was the best redemption to her seventh-place finish in the Linz Marathon, held in April in Austria.
"This was my second marathon since my return from the break. I expected to do well in Austria, only to finish seventh. Winning in Iten is an indication that I am regainingy form," said Cheyech, who has previously represented Kenya at the World Athletics Championships and the Commonwealth Games.
Njuguna, on the other hand, was elated to win his first-ever marathon, although he had to break sweat for it, as he trailed the leading pack up to the final five kilometers.
"I am happy to win my first marathon in as many attempts. I was not sure or doing it until I crossed the 20-kilometre mark when I grew in confidence. I also realised that most of the athletes in the leading pack were running out of gas, " said Njuguna.
Meanwhile, James Kiprotich and Joy Cheptoyek won the men's and women's 10k races respectively .
Cheptoyek won in 33:21.51,with Judy Chepngetich and coming in second in 34:17.05.Nancy Jepkemei was third after timing 34:23.07.
In the men's top category , Kiprotich won after cutting the tape after 29 minutes and 42 seconds.
2022 World 5,000m silver medalist Jacob Krop and Amos Langat were second and third in 24:50 and 30:05 respectively .
For Cheyech and Njuguna, their wins earned them Kshs 1 million, with silver medalists in the full marathon taking home Kshs 750,000.
Bronze medalists earned half a million shillings each.
