The Kakamega-based outfit missed a golden opportunity to close the gap on leaders Gor Mahia and second-placed AFC Leopards after being held to a 2-2 draw by Nairobi United in an entertaining encounter staged at Kasarani Stadium on Wednesday, 8 April.
Homeboyz twice took the lead in the pulsating clash but were ultimately forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
Oliver Majaka handed the visitors an early advantage, only for former Homeboyz attacker Michael Karamor to restore parity for Nairobi United.
The Kenya U-20 attacker would once again put Abana Beingo ahead just before the halftime break, but substitute Mustafa Kizza struck a sublime set-piece to ensure the points were shared.
The result saw the Mozzart Bet-backed side move to 46 points, a tally that leaves them trailing AFC Leopards by nine points and leaders Gor Mahia by 11, with seven matches remaining in the campaign.
While the gap presents a significant challenge, Odhiambo remains defiant in his belief that the title race is far from over.
“We still have seven matches to go, and we are not giving up on the title race,” Odhiambo asserted after the match.
“Homeboyz is a big club with ambitions to fight for the league crown. Even if we fall short, it will only mean we slipped, but we are still firmly in the race and want to push until the final day.”
Despite the positive intent, the tactician was left to rue his side’s profligacy in front of goal, an issue he admitted could prove costly if not urgently addressed.
Homeboyz created a flurry of chances, particularly in the opening half, but failed to capitalise.
Rodgers Ouma, Majaka, Moses Mudavadi, and substitute Erick Okutu were all guilty of missing clear opportunities in a match the visitors could have comfortably put beyond reach.
“It is a worrying trend to create numerous chances and fail to convert,” Odhiambo admitted. “This has been happening in several matches. Today, Nairobi United could have soaked in seven goals had we been clinical. It is something we must work on and rectify in the final third.”
The dropped points add further pressure on Homeboyz as the season enters its decisive phase, with every fixture now carrying heightened significance in their pursuit of a maiden league crown.
Attention now shifts to their next assignment, where Kakamega Homeboyz will travel to Kisii to face Shabana FC, knowing that anything short of victory could further dent their fading, yet still alive, title ambitions.
