Kagame Cup semifinal spot at stake as Gor Mahia take on Ugandan giants

Gor Mahia will be aiming to book their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup when they face Uganda Premier League champions, Vipers SC, in a Group A clash at Pele Stadium in Kigali on Monday afternoon.

Both teams head into the encounter on the back of commanding opening victories, with the winner guaranteed a place in the last four of the regional competition.

K'Ogalo announced themselves as genuine title contenders after dismantling Rwandan champions APR FC 5-0 in their opening match on Friday night in one of the club's most dominant performances in recent years.

It was a dream start for new head coach Charles Akonnor, whose revamped side combined defensive solidity with ruthless finishing to overwhelm the hosts.

Assistant captain Mike Kibwage, deputising for the injured Sylvester Owino, opened the scoring in the 33rd minute before Cameroonian striker Patrick Essombe doubled the advantage just two minutes later to hand Gor Mahia a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break.

The Kenyan champions maintained complete control after the restart as new signing Paul Okoth marked his competitive debut with a goal in the 73rd minute.

Fellow debutant Lesley Otieno added the fourth six minutes later before Ghanaian forward Ebenezer Assifuah-Inkoom came off the bench to complete the emphatic 5-0 victory.

Despite the emphatic win, coach Charles Akonnor insists his side is still far from the finished product and has promised tactical adjustments and squad rotation against Vipers.

"The next game will be approached with different tactics. Every single player in this squad will have a chance to play," Akonnor said during Sunday's pre-match press conference. "By the time we leave here, we want to have a fair idea of the kind of players we have and who can start at any given game."

He added: "The new players who were given a chance showed great attitude. We are very satisfied and very happy with their performance, but that is not all. It is just the second week of pre-season and we believe that if we continue to train well and improve our understanding, we will be even better."

Akonnor also singled out left-back Mohamed Siraj for praise after his outstanding display against APR. "I think he did very well. We had a lot to talk about with him and also to encourage him. He has a rough idea of what we expect of him. Siraj is in a very good position to play and to get his chance. To be fair, everyone here deserves a fair opportunity."

Vipers SC also made an impressive start to their campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Djibouti's Garde Républicaine.

Former Uganda Cranes star Farouk Miya stole the show on his return to the club, scoring twice in the opening half before Abdu Karim Watambala added a third in first-half stoppage time to wrap up maximum points.

The Venoms were equally solid defensively, with Kevin Dasylva Bady and Nicholas Mwere marshalling the backline to secure a clean sheet despite increased pressure after the interval.

Vipers head coach Denis Jean Lavagne was pleased with his team's opening performance but acknowledged the significance of Monday's showdown.

"It is good to start with a win in the tournament. Now we focus on the next match against Gor Mahia," he said.

Gor Mahia currently top Group A on goal difference after their 5-0 triumph over APR FC, while Vipers sit second following their 3-0 victory over Garde Républicaine.

With both teams level on three points, Monday's clash is effectively a battle for an early semi-final ticket.

Victory will not only guarantee qualification to the last four but also strengthen the winner's credentials as one of the favourites to lift the regional crown.

The tournament, running from July 24 to August 7 in Rwanda, features 12 clubs from across the CECAFA region, with the champions set to pocket $30,000 (Ksh3.8 million).
