The decision comes after Mombasa United suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of Kibera Black Stars on Saturday, 11 April at Gems Cambridge in Karen, Nairobi.

The result appears to have triggered deeper concerns within the club’s hierarchy despite their impressive league standing.

In an official letter signed by CEO Nick Arunga, the club confirmed Selebwa’s dismissal with immediate effect, citing contractual provisions and internal assessments, though stopping short of explicitly detailing the reasons behind the move.

“Pursuant to Clause 5 (Termination) of the said Contract, the Club hereby issues notice of termination of your employment as Head Coach of Mombasa United Football Club.

The Club has exercised its contractual rights in line with its sporting objectives and internal review of team performance,” read part of the statement.

The letter further directed the outgoing tactician to facilitate a smooth transition by handing over all club property and cooperating with both technical and administrative departments, while assuring him that any outstanding dues would be settled in accordance with contractual terms.

Selebwa’s departure comes at a critical juncture in the season, with just 10 matches remaining before the campaign reaches its climax.

Remarkably, he leaves the Mombasa-based outfit sitting joint top of the standings alongside Migori Youth, both sides locked on 58 points in what is shaping up to be a fiercely contested promotion race.

Having taken charge on August 1, 2025, the former AFC Leopards tactician oversaw a campaign defined by strong results.

Under his stewardship, Mombasa United registered 19 wins, the highest tally in the league, alongside one draw and eight defeats, numbers that would ordinarily underline a successful season.
