Joash Onyango suffered an injury in Simba's 3-0 win over Al Merreikh in the CAF Champions League.

Kenyan international Joash Onyango was unfortunate not to complete Simba’s 3-0 thumping of Sudanese champions Al Merreikh in the CAF Champions League on Tuesday 16 March.

This was the third successive group stage game that Joash was starting following his move from reigning Kenyan champions Gor Mahia back in August.

The former Western Stima defender was stretchered off at the stroke of half time after the ball cannoned off his head from close range when Wend Bambara attempted to cross the ball from the right flank.

Joash hoped onto a stretcher and was rushed off the pitch to undertake a concussion assessment test with Erasto Nyoni replacing him.

Mozambique midfielder Luis Miquissone again dazzled for Simba as he opened the scoring in the 18th minute, capitalizing on a defensive mixup from the Merreikh backline to tap the ball into the net via the upright.

Al Merreikh who were weakened after eight of their players tested positive for Covid-19 failed to recover after going down as they let in another goal six minutes to the break with skipper Mohammed Husseini finishing a wonderful assist from Bernard Morrison into the bottom left corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Simba needed five minutes after the resumption of the second half to put the game beyond Al Merrikh with Miquissone turning provider as he delivered a pinpoint cross Mutshimba Mugalu who chested the ball down brilliantly before rifling it into the net.

Former Gor Mahia midfielder Francis Kahata was introduced in the 83rd minute for Miquissone who had another impressive game after scoring the winner against Al Ahly in Match Day 2.

Simba fans were delighted to see Onyango smile on the bench after the full-time whistle as he had a warm embrace with coach Didier Gomes Da Rosa.

The Tanzanian champions are on the brink of their second-ever qualification to the Champions League quarter-finals as they top Group A with 10 points.

Elsewhere in Kinshasa, Al Ahly returned back to winning ways with a 0-3 win over AS Vita with goals from Mohamed Sherif, Mohamed Kafsha and Taher Mohamed to put them in contention for qualification to the knockout stages leaving Simba to only require a point to proceed from the group stages.
