Argentine arrives to revive his career at Stamford Bridge

It’s well known how Manchester United has bought players in recent years: expensive and poorly. And it’s also well known how they sell: cheaply. Many high-priced transfers have turned out to be failures. Just to name a few: Lukaku, Fred, Wan-Bissaka, Van de Beek, Varane, Sancho, Antony, Casemiro, Onana, Mount, Hojlund, Zirkzee, and Mount. Their transfers have cost United close to 760 milion euros. Only three of them were bought for less than 50 milion euros. United has not made a profit on any of them. On a few, they barely recouped anything—just a little over 110 milion euros in total.

So it’s no surprise that today’s transfer of Alejandro Garnacho to Chelsea is United’s most expensive sale since 2019. The Argentine has joined Chelsea for 46 milion euros plus 10% of the next sale. In the last six years, United’s priciest sale had been Romelu Lukaku’s move to Inter for 74 milion euros.

Garnacho now joins a line of young players who burned out at Old Trafford—like Mason Greenwood, Alvaro Carreras, Scott McTominay, or Anthony Elanga—who brought the club a clean profit but now shine elsewhere and are worth more. Garnacho hopes to follow in their footsteps after being sidelined by Ruben Amorim at Manchester.

This summer, numerous clubs were linked with Garnacho and wanted him in their squad, but from the start, he only wanted Chelsea, turning down calls from Napoli, Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham, Leverkusen, Atletico Madrid…

As for Chelsea, with this transfer, the Blues have pushed their summer spending past 300 milion euros!

And they don’t intend to stop there, as today they sent an official €40,000,000 offer to Barcelona for Fermin Lopez, but the Catalans didn’t even respond, demanding 70 milion euros—reminding that they spent 116 milion euros for Moises Caicedo two years ago.

We’ll see how the Blues handle those negotiations. Initially, they offered Manchester United 35 milion euros for Garnacho, the Red Devils wanted 58 milion euros and they eventually settled somewhere in between.
