Celta Vigo's trip to Benitez's old stomping ground is an intriguing prospect
Rafael Benitez is one of the biggest names in Spanish football in this century. So, it was big news when Celta Vigo convinced him to return to work in his homeland after an eight-year break. However, Rafa's tenure in Vigo has been a bitter affair instead of a sweet return to Spain.
Despite the club's aspirations to compete at a higher level, Benitez's arrival hasn't yielded the anticipated results. The team's form has been dismal, with just one win from 13 games, leaving them stranded in the relegation zone. The former Liverpool, Chelsea, Inter, Napoli, Newcastle and Everton boss' career got off to a fantastic start nearly two decades ago at Valencia, the club his Celta will face this weekend. However, Benitez has encountered significant difficulties lately, including disappointing results, questionable tactics, defensive frailties, and a string of controversial refereeing decisions.

While the manager has used these incidents to portray Celta as victims of bad luck, the team's poor performances and statistical deficiencies, such as low possession and subpar defensive capabilities, reveal deeper-rooted issues. Benitez's tactical choices have been inconsistent, switching between formations without finding sustained success. Despite the team's struggles, Celta's management has refrained from dismissing the 63-year-old coach immediately due to financial and emotional investments, including a three-year contract and a relatively high salary.
The upcoming matches hold immense importance for Benitez's future at the club. The New Year break will be a crucial deadline for improvement, with speculation suggesting that his job could be on the line if results do not pick up soon. Celta's results in the upcoming fixtures will make or break Rafa. If he fails - it's hard to see any bug club taking a chance on him in the future.
Valencia's Mestalla was the arena of many of Benitez's triumphs. The legendary coach needs another good result at the iconic stadium - this time in favour of the visiting team.
