Manchester United have made it official that Rasmus Hojlund has completed a permanent switch to Napoli after spending the season on loan in Italy. The Denmark international, who joined United from Atalanta in 2023, now heads back to Serie A on a full-time deal after Napoli activated a compulsory purchase option.
His future had been the subject of speculation for some time, but the situation has now been resolved with United confirming his departure to the Italian side. The club issued a brief farewell message on their official website, saying: "Everyone at the club would like to wish Rasmus all the very best for the future."
Hojlund’s exit brings an end to a three-year spell with the Premier League club. Signed in the summer of 2023 as a lifelong supporter of United, he went on to register 26 goals in 95 appearances for the Red Devils.
During his time in England, he also lifted silverware, coming off the bench in the 2024 FA Cup final win over Manchester City at Wembley. The transfer had effectively been predetermined by a clause in last year’s agreement, which made the deal permanent if Napoli qualified for the Champions League by finishing in the top four of Serie A. Napoli secured that spot after a 3-0 league win over Pisa last month, a game in which Hojlund both scored and assisted.
The transfer is reported to be worth around £38 million, giving United a significant return as they continue reshaping their squad. Away from the Premier League pressure, Hojlund found strong form in Naples, finishing as the club’s top scorer with 16 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions during his loan spell.
His contributions were key in Serie A as Napoli finished runners-up and also lifted the Supercoppa Italiana. Earlier in the season, after his permanent move was agreed, the striker reflected emotionally on leaving the club he grew up supporting.
Addressing United fans, he wrote: "To say goodbye to Manchester United is something that kinda feels emotional. My childhood dream came true by playing at Old Trafford in a red jersey. The way you fans supported me, made me feel like home and let me find my confidence again is something I’m so grateful for."
He added: "So the goal today symbolizes a new confident start, in which I will give everything for the time ahead to Napoli, and a thank you to all the fans, players and staff of Manchester United who made the dream I had as a kid come true. It’s time for new dreams, so let’s chase them."
