Is Chelsea’s season suddenly crumbling down?

Reading Time: 3min | Mon. 17.05.21. | 11:33

After an impressive run, Thomas Tuchel's men are now facing a possible defeat in the Champions League race

What a mess one defeat can make....in a tight race for the Champions League spot, Chelsea looked almost unstoppable just days ago, right before the Arsenal match. They were in the third place, after a win over the new champions Manchester City, and they had two finals coming up, FA Cup and the Champions League.

But now, after two defeats in a row, the Blues might finish the season feeling blue. With one final left and two rounds of the Premier League, Thomas Tuchel can find himself out of the top four and into the Europa League, and that’s exactly why Frank Lampard was sacked in the first place. FA Cup is the oldest competition in the world, but it’s not important for the Top six clubs in the Premier League. They are only thinking about money, which means – the Champions League, and one detail explains it all: If Chelsea won the FA Cup on Saturday, players would split a bonus of 1 million pounds. If they win in the Champions League, they’ll divide 10 million.

Tuchel’s men are still masters of their faith, as they only need to win in both rounds in order to remain in the top four. But after a FA Cup against Leicester, the players cannot be relaxed knowing they are playing them again, this time in the Premier League, on Tuesday. And Liverpool is on the hunt, with games against Burnley and Crystal Palace surely easier than Chelsea’s.

And Thomas Tuchel tried to downplay the potential psychological impact of that defeat coming into the two crucial games.

Arsenal increased the pressure for the game on Tuesday. Today was an isolated game, it has nothing to do with the race for the top four or the Champions League final. You wouldn’t be normal if you weren’t affected by losing a Wembley final. It hurts. It takes time to recover. If you have a group that arrives in the (FA Cup) final, a Champions League final and arrives from ninth placed to be in the race for the top four, there’s no reason to doubt that we are not strong enough to handle the situation,’ Tuchel explained. We were strong enough to arrive here so I’m pretty sure we are strong enough to handle the situation. But that’s the challenge. Is it easy? No. But it’s fun because this is what it is all about. There are a lot of teams out there who are jealous of our situation, I can tell you“ explained the German after the FA Cup defeat.

He has every right to be optimistic, but in the end, a possible FA Cup and a Champions League defeats, combined with a failed Champions League spot race would be unthinkable.
