Ingwe captain outlines different league approach

Ingwe are currently on a 22 year trophy doubt. Can they turn everything around this season?

For the last 22 years, AFC Leopards has failed to win a league title. And if the past five seasons in the league is anything to go by, that trophy drought seems to be extending. Ingwe have only managed to finish as high as sixth in the last five campaigns in the top flight.

However, in the currently suspended 2020/2021 campaign, Ingwe - who are the second most successful team in the country - look to have set out on a different trajectory. The club currently sit in third place on the log on 29 points, just seven points adrift log leading Tusker with two games in hand.

Club captain Robinson Kamura, in an interview on the league’s social media pages, has come out to explain the different approach they are taking in a bid to gift their loyal fan base the much coveted title.

“When we started the season, we did not want to have a campaign like the previous ones. I have been at AFC Leopards for five years now and we have been starting the season poorly. But this time, we are taking it game by game and playing each and every game like a final. You can plan for the whole season and fail to achieve. But when you play game by game you fight for three points and at the end of the season, you win the league with the most points and not anything else,” the captain said.

Apart from sitting third on the log, AFC look sharp on both ends of the pitch. Striker Elvis Rupia lies second on the scoring charts with eleven goals while Ingwe boast having the meanest defense in the league, having only let in nine goals in fourteen games played.

The side are also starting to produce consistent results in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League. Since appointing former Simba head coach Patrick Aussems, Ingwe has only lost one game, winning three consecutively before drawing their last game before sporting activities were suspended in the country. Whether the club has learnt a thing or two, is a case of wait and see.
