Jose Arnoldo Amaya, 63, was violently attacked on the pitch during the match
The truly horrible news is coming from the Central American state of El Salvador, as referee Jose Arnoldo Amaya has died as a consequence of violence during a football match.
Amaya, 63, was brutally beaten up by fans and players while officiating a match last weekend in the capital of San Salvador.
Jose Arnoldo Amaya (©Teleprensa)The Salvadoran Football Federation condemned the death of a referee in a press release, saying it "rejects the physical aggression" directed at the referee by "so-called supporters and players during a match that he refereed at the Toluca stadium in San Salvador."

A member of the National Association of Football Referees of El Salvador, Amaya, was violently attacked before being taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Police have not yet established exact details on what occurred and are still looking for the culprits. Amaya had served some 20 years as a referee for neighbourhood, school and football league matches in El Salvador.
