Homeboyz goalkeeper eyes Harambee Stars debut after overcoming 8-month injury layoff

Kakamega Homeboyz goalkeeper Ibrahim Wanzala has set his sights on making his senior Harambee Stars debut after overcoming a challenging eight-month injury layoff.

The 20-year-old shot-stopper, had been sidelined for the better part of the ongoing season due to a knee injury, that required surgery.

Wanzala underwent the procedure immediately after the conclusion of last season, forcing him to miss close to eight months of competitive action.

The Kenya u-20 custodian made his much-anticipated return on 7 February during the Mozzart Bet Cup Round of 64 clash against Amani Youth FC. 

Since then, he has cemented his position between the posts, featuring in eleven matches across all competitions and keeping three clean sheets.

Speaking after Kakamega Homeboyz shared a four-goal thriller with Nairobi United, Wanzala expressed confidence in his readiness for the next step in his career.

"I have now fully recovered from the injury that kept me out for almost eight months. Having returned to action and played a few matches, my focus is to deliver consistent performances and regain my best form. My aim is to represent the country at the senior level, and I am doing everything possible to be ready when called upon," Wanzala said.

Reflecting on the draw with Nairobi United, Wanzala admitted that small errors cost the team valuable points but remained optimistic about improvements moving forward.

"We made minor mistakes that led to the goals we conceded, which was a setback. However, we will work to correct these shortcomings to ensure we drop fewer points in the future," he added.

Homeboyz will now turn their attention to cup duty when they face Ulinzi Stars on Sunday,11 April aiming to strengthen their bid for a second Mozzart Bet Cup title.
