Hungarian midfielder is certain to leave Leipzig with Newcastle United his most likely destination
Football is not all about trophies and titles. If it were, players would never play for those clubs that never win anything. Sometimes, it's about money, ambition, change or glamour. It depends on who wants what. Dominik Szoboszlai is the kind of guy who wants to test himself in the strongest competition, the Premier League.
Before we go any further, let's get this out of the way: his surname is pronounced SAW-BOSS-LAH-AY.

For over a month, there have been reports that Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is a big fan of the 22-year-old star and that the Magpies would activate Szoboszlai's release clause, believed to stand at $75 million to sign the attacking-minded midfielder. And after Leipzig won the DFB-Pokal by beating Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday night, it looked like Dominik was saying goodbye to the club. Even though he scored the second goal in the 2-0 win and sealed the trophy win, he looks set to join Newcastle, the club that hasn't won the FA Cup since 1955.
Hungarian midfielder will probably leave RB Leipzig after two and a half years with the German club - and a total of just over six years in Red Bull's football system, in which he'd trained with Red Bull Salzburg's feeder club Liefering before becoming a professional with the Austrian champions. Szoboszlai needed just one full season to show he was too talented to play in the Austrian Bundesliga, so he moved to the big brother club - RB Leipzig, in early 2021.

Newcastle's newly-found ambition came with the Saudi consortium-led takeover but has really blossomed because of Howe's vision and tactical ideas. The magpies qualified for the UEFA Champions League in his first full season in charge at St. James' Park and will have to improve their squad ahead of schedule to be ready for the club's first UCL campaign in two decades. The club's philosophy says they will look to sign young players who can improve dramatically, so players like Szoboszlai fit the criteria perfectly. It's likely to be an eventful transfer window in Newcastle.
