New Harambee Stars boy Vincent Harper believes that Kenya can qualify for the 2025 African Cup of Nations in Morocco and the 2026 World Cup that will be staged in the US, Mexico, and Canada.
Harper is the latest foreign-based player to earn a call-up to the Stars squad. The left-back, who can also play on the left wing, turns out for English third-tier club Exeter City FC. He is part of the Kenya squad that will play Russia on Monday in an international friendly in Turkey.
The 23-year-old has already linked up with the Stars squad in the European nation, and in an interview with FKF Media, the speedster said the ambition within the squad is high and that he is confident that the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualification is within Kenya’s reach. He went a notch higher and said the Stars could secure passage to the next World Cup showpiece.
“The ambitions are high; from the squad we have at the moment, it is a very good squad, and we have a good coach and staff. If we work hard, we can reach the Africa Cup of Nations and even qualify for the World Cup," he said.
Harper went on to discuss his roots, revealing that he was born in Kenya to Kenyan parents before they moved to the UK.
“I was born in Kenya, Kenya. Both parents were born in Kenya as well, and I moved to England when I was quite young." .
His integration into the Stars squad has been smooth, and the player appears to have already settled in.
“It was great to familiarize myself with the rest of the squad and engage in training. I am grateful to be here. Staff are very helpful and give us all we need".
Meanwhile, coach Engin Firat responded to criticism over his squad selection. There has been an uproar over some omissions, with league-top scorer Benson Omala's exclusion irking most Kenyans. The tactician said the door is open for any player, but that the final squad selection decision rests with him.
“Everyone has their expectations for our squad selection. My job is to build a formidable team for the upcoming assignments. Nonetheless, the door is open for anyone to come in or out. I am confident that the squad I have is capable of the task ahead,” he stated.
