Last year’s finalists Singida Black Stars, boosted by Harambee Stars forward Elvis Rupia, will host Mbeya City FC, while Namungo FC welcome TRA United.
Harambee Stars midfielder Duke Abuya was involved as Young Africans SC booked their place in the quarter-finals of the CRDB Federation Cup following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over TMA Stars on Saturday night, 11 April, at KMC Stadium.
The former Kariobangi Sharks talisman, who was introduced in the second half, played his part in helping the defending champions grind out a crucial result in a tightly contested round of 16 encounter.
Yanga, who lifted last season’s title after defeating Singida Black Stars 2-0 in the final, endured a frustrating outing for large spells of the match, struggling to break down a resilient TMA Stars side.
The first half produced limited clear-cut chances, with both sides locked in a tactical battle.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 69th minute when DR Congo forward Maxi Nzengeli struck the decisive goal, calmly finishing to hand Yanga a narrow but vital lead.
That goal proved enough to separate the two sides, as Yanga managed the closing stages with composure to secure progression and keep their title defence firmly on track.
The victory sees Yanga advance to the last eight alongside Coastal Union, Mashujaa FC, and JKT Tanzania, further underlining their intent to retain the crown.
The result also strengthens their bid for a domestic double in back-to-back seasons, with the Dar es Salaam giants currently sitting atop the league standings.
Elsewhere, it was a disappointing outing for Pamba Jiji FC, a side with strong Kenyan connections under head coach Francis Baraza.
The team, featuring Brian Eshianda, Mathew Tegisi, and Shaphan Oyugi, suffered a 2-0 defeat to Coastal Union to bow out of the competition.
In other round of 16 fixtures staged on Saturday, Mashujaa progressed after edging Geita Gold FC 4-2 on post-match penalties following a draw in regulation time, while JKT Tanzania cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Mbuni FC.
The round of 16 action continues on Sunday with several high-profile fixtures lined up. Simba SC will face Dodoma Jiji FC, while Azam FC take on Fountain Gate FC.
Last year’s finalists Singida Black Stars, boosted by Harambee Stars forward Elvis Rupia, will host Mbeya City FC, while Namungo FC welcome TRA United.
