After wide speculations over the team's future after their relegation from the FKFPL at the end of the 2024/25 season, it is now official that the team has been disbanded.
This is after the team's chairman, construction mogul Jonathan Jackson, withdrew his sponsorship through the Jonathan Jackson Foundation.
In an exclusive interview with Mozzart Sport, City Stars team coordinator Samson Otieno, who is also a close associate of Jackson, disclosed the reason.
“Yes. I can confirm that the team has been disbanded. The boss felt that he put in a lot of money, but the team was not serious and did not produce performances commensurate with his investment, including being relegated,” said Otieno.
City Stars suffered the drop after finishing 17th in the FKF Premier League table, in what was a disastrous season for the club, which had finished sixth in the previous campaign.
In a league with teams struggling to pay salaries and allowances, it was unexpected that City Stars would have such a dismal performance, considering the team's financial welfare was well taken care of, with salaries and allowances paid in a timely manner.
According to Otieno, Jackson failed to come to terms with the team's relegation despite pumping in sizeable investments.
“He therefore did not see a reason to continue investing in a team whose performance does not reflect the efforts of the management,” remarked Otieno.
Jonathan took over the team in March 2019 when it was facing financial difficulties and a looming relegation from the National Super League (NSL).
He then guided the team to safety and, thereafter, gained promotion in the following season.
In their first season back to the top tier in 2020, they finished the league in seventh position, with Jackson a constant figure in their home matches for two seasons
However, his presence gradually diminished in the 2023/24 season after the team started posting dismal results at a time when it is believed Johnathan expected his side to challenge for the title, but finished in 15th position.
Jackson’s withdrawal brings an end to his over six-year association with the club.
Notably, Jackson, through his company Lordship Africa, is currently constructing the iconic 88- the high-rise residential building in the Upper Hill Area of Nairobi that, upon completion, will be the tallest residential building on the continent.
