Kenya will open their CECAFA campaign against Burundi on Sunday, 15 June, at the Azam Complex

Former Harambee Starlets head coach Godfrey ‘Solo’ Oduor has been appointed as the team’s assistant coach for the upcoming CECAFA Women’s Championship in Tanzania.

Oduor, who briefly served as the Starlets coach in 2021, replaces Jackline Juma, who has been head coach Beldine Odemba’s assistant for the past two years. However, Oduor will only deputise Odemba for this tournament, which kicks off on Friday.

Currently the assistant coach of South Sudanese club Jamus FC, Oduor has previously served as head coach at Kibera Black Stars and Nzoia Sugar FC. He has also been an assistant at KCB FC, Shabana FC, and Harambee Starlets.

A source privy to the development did not provide a specific reason for the change but hinted that it might have been an internal decision.

“We don’t really know what exactly transpired, but Juma will not be part of the team in Tanzania. Solo has travelled with the team and will deputise the head coach just for this tournament,” the source disclosed.

This will be Oduor’s second tournament in a deputy role in the past two months. In May, he was part of the Kenya U20 technical bench in Egypt, serving as the second assistant coach.

The team exited the championship at the group stage hurdle after two losses against Morocco and Tunisia, coupled with a draw against Nigeria.

Kenya will open their CECAFA campaign against Burundi on Sunday, 15 June, at the Azam Complex. They will then face Uganda on Tuesday, 17 June, South Sudan on Thursday, 19 June, and hosts Tanzania on Saturday, 21 June, in their remaining group fixtures.

Tanzania remains the most decorated nation in CECAFA Women’s Championship history with two titles. Kenya, Uganda, and Zanzibar have each won the tournament once.
