Harambee Starlets coach credits player for emphatic victory over Uganda

Harambee Starlets assistant coach Godfrey 'Solo' Oduor has lauded goalkeeper Lilian Awuor for the early save she pulled against Uganda, describing it as a potential turning point in the match, as Kenya went on to rout their neighbours 4-0 in the CECAFA Women’s Championship.

Uganda came out strong in the opening stages and made Kenya uncomfortable at the back, but they could not beat Awuor in goal. Kenya then turned the tide with three goals in 20 minutes to leapfrog the Crested Cranes into second place in the standings.

The win was Kenya’s second in as many games, and they now trail group leaders Tanzania only on goal difference heading into matchday three on Thursday, where they face the tournament's punching bags, South Sudan, who are anchored to the foot of the table without a single point.

Despite the statement victory, Oduor credited his goalkeeper in his post-match interview, emphasising the importance of her early save. He said that had Uganda scored first, the outcome might have been different.

“First, I think our goalkeeper gave us the win today because she made a great save from the first chance of the game, which made the difference.

Credit to her for today’s win, and thanks also to the goalkeepers’ trainers—they’re doing a great job.”

He also praised their opponents, noting that Uganda gave Kenya a real test despite the scoreline.

“It was a good game. Uganda is a good team, and they were very competitive,” he said.

“Overall, it was a good game. We took our chances and won, and this gives us confidence heading into our next game against South Sudan,” he added.

On what the technical bench has done to make the team more ruthless, the former KCB FC assistant coach said they are working on instilling a competitive mentality in the players.

“We used to play football just for fun, but we are changing that to take things more seriously and help the players understand that we are here for serious work.”

Kenya will play South Sudan on Thursday, 19 June, at 4 PM.
