Kenya is among 35 African nations set to compete in the qualification campaign for the African qualifiers of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games Women’s Football Tournament.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the draw for the qualifying phase will be held on Wednesday, 29 April 2026, at its headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
The event will be streamed live on CAF TV from 3 pm.
The participating teams include:Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Comoros, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Harambee Starlets head into the qualifiers on the back of an impressive outing in the FIFA Series tournament held in Kenya, where they finished second.
The Beldine Odemba-led side secured a 2-0 victory over India in the semi-finals before falling by a similar scoreline to Australia in the final.
Despite the defeat, the performance was widely viewed as a success, given the significant gap in global rankings between Kenya and the Matildas.
The matches, alongside a series of upcoming friendlies, form a crucial part of the team’s preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled to take place in Morocco from 25 July to 16 August 2026.
The tournament had initially been set for March but was later postponed.
Kenya is expected to line up more build-up matches in the coming months as they gear up for both WAFCON and the Olympic qualifiers, which will be played over five rounds. Only two African teams will secure qualification to the 2028 Olympic Games Women’s Football Tournament, set for 11 to 29 July 2028 in Los Angeles.
