Is there a chance the German returns to the Bundesliga? By all accounts, there is
It increasingly looks like Borussia Dortmund will change their central striker this summer. There has been plenty of talk about it in recent weeks, and as the end of the season approaches, a transfer seems more and more likely—even though a potential new club for the experienced goalscorer is not yet in sight.
Simply put, it feels like Serhou Guirassy and Dortmund have grown tired of each other, as if the relationship has run its course, making this the right moment to part ways before things escalate further.
Tensions have already surfaced on several occasions, particularly between head coach Niko Kovac and the player. Meanwhile, the club’s new sporting director, Nils Ole Buch, is already working on squad planning for next season.
Several strikers are on his radar, with media outlets naming Hoffenheim’s 24-year-old Fisnik Asllani as the leading candidate to take over Guirassy’s number nine role. However, Dortmund are also considering backup options—perhaps even third or fourth choices.
According to yesterday’s edition of Bild, Borussia are exploring the possibility of bringing Nick Woltemade back to the Bundesliga. It doesn’t appear to be the most realistic option, mainly due to the German forward’s high wages, as well as the hefty transfer fee Newcastle would likely demand—if they would even be willing to sell a player they paid as much as €75 million for.
Still, Woltemade’s dip in form over the past few months could open a small window of opportunity for Dortmund, claims Europe’s best-selling newspaper. “The German international is currently not considering a transfer. He wants to fully focus on the World Cup, but things could change by the summer. For Dortmund, a loan deal seems to be the only realistic option at this moment,” Bild reports.

Woltemade has not scored for Newcastle since the end of December. In the meantime, he has often found himself on the bench, recording just two assists in his last 13 Premier League appearances. During February and March, he failed to complete a single full match, being substituted before the 70th minute each time.
Since joining Newcastle, Woltemade has made 48 appearances, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists.
