The Government of Kenya (GoK), through the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, has announced plans to construct a 5,000-seater mini stadium at Kasarani.

Over the past three years, GoK has been improving and constructing various stadiums across the country in a bid to improve sporting standards through infrastructure.

In an announcement made by Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Salim Mvurya during the Pre-CHAN press conference on Thursday, 10 July, the stadium will come from one of the Kasarani Annexes which were renovated for use as training grounds for CHAN.

“Immediately after CHAN, we will turn one of the two training facilities at Kasarani into a 5,000-seater stadium to help us in accommodating matches that do not attract large crowds,” said Mvurya.

The former Kwale County Governor went ahead to reveal the need for a smaller stadium next to Kenya's biggest sporting facility.

“There are teams who would want to use our facilities but would not necessarily find the need to use the 60,000-seater stadium, and so this stadium would be ideal for them.”

Over the past few seasons, Kasarani Annex A was approved by FKF and hosted low-risk FKF Premier League matches, with Annex B expected to also host such matches next season after it was renovated to serve as a training ground for CHAN.

“We have a plan of improving sports infrastructure across the country, and I would like to urge all Kenyans to protect the sporting infrastructure that is being built,” added Mvurya.

As of now, there are several sporting facilities undergoing renovations across the country, including the Eldoret Stadium, the Kipchoge Stadium in Kapsabet, Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, and the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya.

In addition to these is the ultra-modern legacy project, Talanta Sports City which is expected to be complete by 31 December and is earmarked to be Kenya's main stadium for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
