With just 19 days to the Monday, 20 October function, Interior Principal Secretary (PS) Dr Raymond Omollo confirmed that works at the 10,000-seater facility are in advanced stages.
In a statement issued on his official Facebook page, Dr Omollo noted that a multi-agency inspection team had toured the stadium and key supporting infrastructure to assess readiness.

“Ahead of the forthcoming Mashujaa Day National Celebrations, we conducted a multi-agency inspection tour of key facilities and amenities in Kitui County.
Hosted by Governor Julius Malombe, the visit focused on assessing the readiness of Ithookwe Stadium, earmarked as the main venue, alongside associated infrastructure critical to hosting a successful event,” Dr Omollo wrote.
The PS was accompanied by colleagues Charles Hinga (Housing and Urban Development), Teresia Mbaika (Devolution), and Aden Millah (Shipping and Maritime Affairs), underlining the government’s multi-sectoral approach in ensuring the celebrations proceed seamlessly.
This latest briefing comes barely three weeks after an earlier update revealed that construction was 80 per cent complete. The Ksh700 million upgrade began in June and is scheduled for handover by Monday, 6 October, giving the state ample time to finalise preparations.

Key works at the site include the construction of a 10,000-capacity modern stadium with a FIFA-approved pitch, athletics track, VIP pavilion, modern changing rooms, perimeter wall, and a canopy covering the stands.
Outside the stadium, roadworks spearheaded by Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) are also progressing, with a 10-kilometre access road being built to link both rural and urban areas to the facility.
Ithookwe now joins a growing list of stadium projects under government development, including Migori, Isiolo, Kipchoge Keino, and the second phase of Bukhungu Stadium.

The flagship Talanta Sports Stadium in Nairobi, a 60,000-seater valued at Ksh44 billion, is also expected to be complete by December.
