In an official update on his Facebook page, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo described the project as a deliberate state investment aimed at unlocking sporting potential in the South Nyanza region while positioning Migori as a future hub for competitive sports.

“The Migori Stadium is currently undergoing a major upgrade as part of the Government's deliberate investment in sports and talent development, with a particular focus on nurturing the immense and diverse talent found in the South Nyanza Region,” Omollo stated.

According to the PS, the facility will be transformed into a modern 10,000-seater stadium constructed in line with Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.

At the heart of the upgrade is a professional football pitch designed to meet continental benchmarks, a move that could enable the venue to host high-level regional and national competitions.

Complementing the pitch will be an eight-lane running track, signalling the government’s intention to broaden the stadium’s utility beyond football and into athletics.

The infrastructure will also include modern changing rooms built to contemporary specifications, alongside a fully equipped gym intended to support athlete conditioning and performance development.

Further elevating the complex, the design incorporates a basketball court, a pavilion to enhance spectator experience, and VIP lounges that will allow the venue to accommodate dignitaries and high-profile guests during major events.

Collectively, these additions are meant to give the stadium a multi-sport character while aligning it with the standards expected of modern sporting arenas.

“Once complete, the facility will be transformed into a modern, 10,000-seater stadium built to CAF standards, positioning Migori as a key hub for competitive sports and youth empowerment,” Omollo added, noting that the expanded amenities will significantly enhance the region’s capacity to stage both regional and national tournaments.

Beyond infrastructure, the project is already yielding economic dividends. The construction phase has created employment opportunities for local residents, injecting income into the local economy and reinforcing the broader developmental impact of the investment.

Omollo further disclosed that the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration continues to coordinate security and administrative oversight to ensure the works proceed in a safe, orderly, and efficient manner.

Construction of the stadium began in July 2025 under Royal Contractors Limited and is currently estimated to be 40 per cent complete, with the government projecting that the facility will be ready by mid-2026.

Once finished, the stadium is expected to become the home ground of National Super League (NSL) side Migori Youth, who are currently placed second in the standings and pushing for promotion to the FKF Premier League.

For Migori Youth, possible promotion to the top flight could coincide with the unveiling of a stadium capable of meeting FKFPL competition standards.
