Ugly confrontation was witnessed after Gor Mahia played Murang'a Seal to a barren draw last weekend.
Acts of hooliganism will cost record Kenyan league winners Gor Mahia Ksh.1,995,000 for the damaged property at the Kasarani Stadium last weekend.
Gor played league debutants Murang’a Seal to a barren draw at the facility but the result did not sit well with a section of fans who damaged seats, electrical, and wooden panels.
The irate fans who engaged the police in an ugly confrontation are understood to have taken issue with the levels of officiating, particularly Benson Omala’s disallowed goal for offside.
According to Sports Kenya, the body in charge of government-owned stadiums, a total of 295 seats were damaged by the time calm was restored.
12 PWD wooden panels and four electrical panels were also vandalized by the hooligans who were also faulted for causing bodily harm to Seal fans.
Sports Kenya valued each seat at Ksh.5,000 bringing the total to Ksh.1,475,000 while the wooden panels were priced at Ksh.20,000.
The damaged electrical panes cost Gor half a million shillings.
The chaos watered down what was supposed to have been a great sporting day given the events that preceded the highly-hyped match.
Before the match day rituals and the game, itself, Gor launched their new art of the state bus that was donated by Cabinet Secretary for ICT and sports enthusiast Eliud Owalo.
Further, the talks of the new playing kits or the team and replica for the fans was a source of joy to the ‘Green Army’.
However, the team couldn’t cap the day with a win on the pitch triggering the unfortunate scenes at the facility.
In a letter to Gor chairman Ambrose Rachier that was copied to the Cabinet Secretary for Sports Ababu Namwamba, Principal Secretary to the state department, and the Football Kenya Federation President, K’Ogalo have been directed to pay the amount to facilitate repair works.
Further, the club will not be allowed to host any match in a facility under Sports Kenya until the bill is cleared.
“Gor Mahia will be required to submit an elaborate plan of action on how the club will be able to contain such actions from their fans. Failure to do so, Sports Kenya will have no option but to deny fans entry during your matches,” added the letter.
