Neiva is under pressure, with reports suggesting that his position could be at risk
Gor Mahia head coach Leonardo Neiva is determined to steer his team back to the top after a winless streak of four matches that has raised concerns among fans.
The defending league champions have not secured a victory in their last four games, losing two and drawing the other two. They suffered a 2-1 defeat to Nairobi City Stars, a 2-0 loss to Bandari and drew 0-0 with KCB, and 2-2 draw against Murang'a Seal FC.
The draw with Murang'a Seal was particularly controversial, as Gor Mahia surrendered a 2-0 halftime lead, conceding the equalizer in stoppage time. This led to a violent reaction from some fans in Machakos, who physically attacked Neiva after the match.
Neiva is under pressure, with reports suggesting that his position could be at risk if results do not improve soon. However, the Brazilian coach remains confident that hard work will turn things around.
"We are the reigning champions, and we are going to work hard to get back to where we belong. We need to start winning, and I believe through hard work, we will achieve that," Neiva told Flashscore.
When asked about the pressure of managing the 21-time league champions, the former Vipers coach acknowledged the challenges but urged the fans to remain patient and supportive as the team strives to improve.
"There is no professional football without pressure, especially at a big club like Gor Mahia. I just ask the fans to believe in us. We are working hard to make them smile and celebrate again," he said.
Gor Mahia has dropped points from winning positions in two of their last four matches, losing 2-1 to Nairobi City Stars after leading 1-0, and giving up a two-goal advantage to draw 2-2 with Murang'a Seal. Neiva attributed these setbacks to a lack of concentration and poor game management.
"In the matches where we took the lead and then conceded in the second half, there was a lack of focus to hold onto the win. Football is about the details, and we need to work hard on managing the game better," he added.
Gor Mahia's next challenge will be the Mashemeji Derby against rivals AFC Leopards after the international break.
