According to the reports from British media, Manchester owners have approved a potential bid for Spurs striker
If there was a time that Glazer brothers really needed crisis management, it is now. For years, Manchester United supporters were not happy with their American owners, but the volcano erupted after the Super League fiasco and the loyal fans are active again in their quest to kick out the owners out of the club.
The Glazer brothers, also the owners of the current NFL champions Tampa Bay Buccaneers, are not going away any time soon, as Manchester is such a well oiled money machine. So, all they need to do is to present some good crisis management and PR skills and show that they „care“. And the best way to do it is to strengthen the squad and become a real title contender the next season.
So, British press is full of reports, published by the Sun first, that the owners have approved a bid of around 14.000.000.000 Ksh for the Tottenham striker Harry Kane. The English international is a proven goal scorer and Manchester is short of proven players up front. Current crop of attackers in the club are not nearly as productive as Kane.
So far, Manchester City was seen as the only club possible of acquiring Spurs striker, but if United would buy him, that would also means that they snatched such a player in front of their rivals. Double win for Glazers. Off course, a couple of pre-events must happen first, in order to bid for Kane at all.
First of all, Tottenham forward must submit a transfer request. The striker has been a long and faithful servant – he is in his seventh year with the club, and he has waited patiently to see if the club would win any silverware in recent season. He got none. Now he will wait to see who is his new coach gonna be, and then think about the whole situation. And it’s clear that two Premier League Golden boots awards are not enough for the Spurs striker.
„When I look back at the end of my career, these are all the things I'll go over and take in a little bit more, but the goal right now as a player is to win team trophies. As much as this is great, I want to be winning the biggest team prizes. We're not quite doing that. It's bittersweet, but it is what it is. I'm proud to win Premier League Player of the Year, it's been a good season on the pitch“ Keane said after winning player of the year at the London Football Awards last month.
Second of all, if he would hand in transfer request and ask to leave, for United to success with their bid, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy would first have to change his decision – not to sell to a Premier League rival. In theory, Levy could agree to sell Kane, but only to a club outside England.
So, basically, it is only a good PR try from Glazers (so far). However, maybe the situation will change for the better come June. But they will need something good in the meantime, because the fans are not resting. After an ugly protest before Liverpool game on Sunday, United fans have bombarded shirt sponsors TeamViewer with negative reviews on Trustpilot and launched a boycott campaign against the club's global partners in protest against the Glazer family.
