The Citizens are preparing in case they lose Ederson

Negotiations between Paris Saint-Germain and Gianluigi Donnarumma over a contract extension have been going on for more than a year. The problem is that the Parisians have failed to move past the starting point, which greatly frustrates them, and they fear they could lose one of the best goalkeepers in the world without a transfer fee—just like in the case of Kylian Mbappe. An additional reason for concern among fans and a rise in tension is the news that the Italian goalkeeper has been left out of the squad for the UEFA Super Cup match against Tottenham.

This could very well mean that one of today’s most reliable shot-stoppers will either leave the club in this transfer window for a fee or walk away as a free agent at the end of the season, exactly as he did when he played for Milan. There are no signs of progress in the talks—PSG is not prepared to offer Donnarumma the same terms he currently enjoys (850,000 euros gross per month), which stems from Luis Campos’ newly implemented business model. Since taking over in 2022, the Portuguese sporting director has introduced a policy whereby PSG guarantees only two-thirds of the total agreed salary, with the remaining third tied to performance—ranging from the number of matches played and team results to individual achievements.

The news that Donnarumma has been left out of the squad means that Lucas Chevalier will take his place between the posts against Tottenham. Chevalier joined this summer from Lille for 40 million, making him the fifth most expensive goalkeeper transfer in history. It’s unlikely that such a costly signing was brought in to sit on the bench, nor would he have agreed to do so. PSG want to keep Donnarumma, but the Italian is in a strong position to negotiate a much higher salary than his current 13 million per year. However, the chances of that happening are shrinking by the day, while Inter, Bayern, and Chelsea are lurking in the background.

There has even been talk of a possible move to Galatasaray, and after all, the Istanbul giants have already shaken European football this summer by signing Victor Osimhen for 75 million euros. But it’s interesting that some reliable sources are claiming that the Turkish giant want a top keeper but not Gigi. They want Ederson from City and British media wrote that Manchester wants a proven keeper in case the Brazilian actually leaves so they already talked to Donnarumma’s entourage. Personal details wouldn’t be a problem as the player is open for a move while PSG would ask between 20 and 30 million euros for their keeper.
