Ghanaian midfielder aims for improvement at Homeboyz

His side has three wins in seven matches played this season

Ghanaian Stephen Opoku was one of the best-scoring midfielders at Kakamega Homeboyz in the 2021–2022 Football Kenya Federation Premier League season.

His goal contribution and ability to dictate play effortlessly in the said season made him a key first-team player.

It is the same reason that compelled the team to reunite with the midfielder in the off-season transfer window for a second spell.

Opoku had left Homeboyz in February following the expiration of his initial two-year deal, but the club offered him a new contract in July.

His second stint with Homeboyz hasn’t been as great as anticipated due to a lack of game time and goal contributions.

The limited game time has forced the 24-year-old to engage another gear in training so as to win the heart of coach Patrick Odhiambo.

“I honestly need to do better. The club showed faith in me in the transfer window, and the best way to repay it is by playing regularly and helping in scoring. I am working hard to rediscover the form I had two seasons ago,” admitted Opoku.

The former Singida Fountain Gate midfielder went on to challenge himself to reach double digits in the season that took off slowly at a personal level.

“I haven’t had the best takeoff, but there are signs of improvement. I want to keep on working hard, as the team needs my input on the pitch and not on the bench. I also have my own targets,” stated Opoku.

It has not been the best start for Homeboyz in the season, as Abana Abeingo has three wins in the first seven matches.

Opoku believes that the team will be in the top three brackets before next month’s FIFA break, which will see the national team launch its bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

“The players know that the team is not supposed to be where it is at the moment on the log. We are aiming for maximum points in the three matches to be played between now and the next break,” added Opoku.
