Get the traitor out!

Milan fans have no patience left for their want-away goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma

He may be one of the best goalkeepers in the world, but the fans have had it with him. Gigi Donnarumma’s Milan contract is running out soon, and despite saying he’d like to remain with the Rossoneri – he’s yet to commit himself to the club. There is always a reason for not signing: either the time wasn’t quite right, or the offers made by the club weren’t deemed good enough.

Driven by his notorious agent Mino Raiola, Donnarumma has been holding AC Milan to ransom all season. The famous club could lose their prized asset, whose market value is estimated at around $65 million, for nothing. Unless a contract extension is signed, Donnarumma will become free to sign with anyone. It’s a scenario Milan fans have been dreading all season. Until now.

Donnarumma has committed a few sins that are not going to be forgiven in a hurry. Presenting the club with unrealistic financial demands that would have made him the second-best paid player in Italy wasn’t a great way to express your willingness to stay. It was more of a statement of greed.

Then, he was filmed grinning after last week’s thrashing at the hands of Lazio. His team suffered a bad defeat and put Champions League qualification in doubt. Still, the 22-year-old goalkeeper seemingly had no problem with it as he stayed on the pitch to exchange shirts with his Lazio counterpart Pepe Reina and proceeded to crack a few jokes with a big smile on his face. That drove the fans up the wall., especially because Donnarumma was given the captain’s armband that day.

"Do you know what hurts the most? Seeing Donnarumma smile and joke after that defeat. We lost 3-0 and the man couldn’t care less! They were calling him the future of Milan. He looks more like the death of Milan. Just let him go!"

"You lose 3-0, and you laugh afterwards? How dare you call yourself a captain?! Get lost, Donnarumma!"

For weeks now, there is talk in Italy that Juventus are keen on signing Donnarumma. It would be seen as another insult to the club by the youngster who spent his entire childhood with Milan’s academy. Juventus is a big rival, and a club Rossoneri fans hate passionately. It seems that Donnarumma is almost trying to draw anger from the people who were overjoyed to see him blossom at San Siro. And it’s why they don’t want to see Gianluigi in goal when Milan and Juve meet in the next round. The supporters fear that Donnarumma would disrespect his teammates in a game against possible future employers.

Comments on social media show that the fans don’t want their club to waste any more time or money on a player who has no respect for them.

"For years I’ve defended Donnarumma because he was a young lad playing well and showing a lot of potential. But he isn’t a kid anymore. He’s a 22-year-old man and not a good man. He’s become the kind of character we don’t want here. Just go!"

"You want 12 million per year!? You’ll only get a boot up your backside. Get out of Milan, you traitor!"

Mino Raiola and his client have been testing the patience of Milan directors, the coach and especially the supporters. If they don’t qualify for the Champions League, they are almost certain to lose their talented custodian. But it may not be the biggest blow. They could lose their dignity and pride if they succumb to disrespectful youngster’s demands.

It’s time for Milan to decide what matters the most.
