The former Aston Villa coach might come back to Scotland
The giant has been shaken. Although, that’s hardly news given how Rangers have been functioning in recent years. This season, they’ve won only one match in the Scottish Premiership, and when you add in their unconvincing results on the international stage (two defeats in the Europa League), the board had no choice but to dismiss Russell Martin.
🚨 Steven Gerrard is being lined-up for a Rangers return after Russell Martin was sacked yesterday.

The leaders of the Scottish giant handed Martin his dismissal on Sunday evening, after only 17 matches in charge — the former Swansea and Southampton manager had taken over in June, replacing Barry Ferguson (who had served as interim coach following Philippe Clement’s departure). In addition to poor results, fan anger also played a major role, culminating during Sunday’s away match at Falkirk. After the 1–1 draw, Rangers supporters surrounded the team bus, forcing Martin to leave the stadium through a side exit and get into a waiting car under chaotic circumstances.
As soon as Martin’s departure became official, speculation began about who might become the new head coach. Among the favorites is Steven Gerrard, primarily because of the impression he left during his three-year spell at Ibrox, when he led the club to the 2021 title — ending Celtic’s nine-year reign. Since then, Rangers haven’t come close to challenging their great rivals. If Gerrard were to return, it would be a homecoming of sorts — to where his managerial career truly began, at least in senior football. Before that, he worked in Liverpool’s youth system and later managed Aston Villa and Saudi side Al-Ettifaq.
Besides the legendary Liverpool captain, the media claim there are two other candidates for the Rangers bench: Danny Rohl (formerly of Sheffield Wednesday) and Sean Dyche (Watford, Burnley, Everton). Whoever takes over, Hearts have already pulled ahead with 19 points, followed by Celtic on 17, while Rangers sit only eighth in the table with eight points.
