Nuno Mendes has to go to Finland for surgery and Luis Enrique will be able to count on the Portuguese only from February
He was (or still is) projected as the future of the national team of Portugal and Paris Saint-Germain in the position of left back, however, injuries are causing great problems for Nuno Mendes in the early stages of his professional career. The guy the French giant brought in on a loan worth 7,000,000 euros two years ago, and bought last summer for an additional 38,000,000, has to undergo an operation, Paris Saint-Germain confirmed.
The latest assessments by the club's medical team showed that surgery is the best solution for the 21-year-old who will go under the knife all the way to the north of Europe, to Finland, on Friday. The Portuguese injured a muscle during the last World Cup, which caused him to take a break from November to mid-January, then he continued to play, but new misfortunes befell him in Ligue 1 at the end of April when he suffered a hamstring injury against Lorient. Because of that injury, he missed the end of the season, and in the current season he did not make a single appearance for the French champions.
The operation is such that it requires a break of four months, and in the best-case scenario, Mendes will be available to Luis Enrique from February, for whom Lucas Hernandez has been the undisputed option at left back since the start of the season. As Juan Bernat left the Parc des Princes this summer, the only backup option remains Layvin Kurzawa.
Nuno Mendes has not played a single match since April 30, and he’s going to miss the next four months after undergoing surgery.

Such a talented player but the amount of injuries he is facing at 21 years old is abnormal…hope he can turn things around in 2024. pic.twitter.com/cf1FEm1TGS
Last season, Mendes recorded slightly more than 1,500 minutes on the field and in those 23 league matches, he scored one and set up six goals. Meanwhile, his price on Transfermarkt has risen to 65,000,000 euros. The only more expensive left-back in the market at the moment is Alphonso Davies, which means that Mendes is ahead of AC Milan's Theo Hernandez in this segment.
