Omondi’s retirement comes as a surprise to many fans, given that he remained actively involved with the retailers in the NSL, featuring prominently in their most recent outing against Kibera Black Stars on 24 January.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport, the former Sofapaka left-back explained that the decision was a carefully considered step toward life after football.
"Yes, it’s true. I have called it a day from the pitch," Omondi stated. "I felt it was time to move on from playing and turn my undivided attention to coaching, which has always been my passion.
I also wanted to plan for life after my playing career. It has been worth every moment, and I have enjoyed every bit of it, but there comes a time to think ahead, and that is why I made this decision."
Reflecting on his career, the 33-year-old immediate former Naivas defender expressed satisfaction with his contributions to the teams he represented and the successes he helped achieve.
Although he retires without an FKF Premier League title, Omondi leaves a legacy highlighted by notable milestones.
During his time at Kariobangi Sharks, the former Lucky Summer player played an instrumental role in the club’s historic victory in the 2018 Mozzart Bet Cup (formerly GOtv Shield Cup), the first major trophy in Sharks’ history, as well as the FKF Super Cup in 2019.
His performances also earned him appearances in the CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC), giving him continental exposure.
Over the course of his career, Omondi, affectionately known as Dimo, featured for many clubs, including Lucky Summer FC, Kariobangi Sharks, 2009 champions Sofapaka FC, defending FKF-PL champions Kenya Police, and most recently, Naivas FC, consistently bringing experience and leadership to every side he represented.
