Kago’s appointment marked a homecoming for the former international, who once thrilled fans in Mathare’s famous green and yellow during his playing days.

Now back in a new capacity, he believes his familiarity with the club’s identity and culture will be vital to their resurgence.

I know the demands of the team, its people, and what they want to achieve,” Kago confidently told The Star.

The 30-year-old has already settled into his role, citing an easy working relationship with head coach John Kamau, under whom he previously played at Posta Rangers.

I have already adapted well; it’s easy working with people I know and trust,” he added.

Mathare currently sit 13th on the FKF Premier League table with four points from four matches.

They opened the season with a 2–1 loss to Posta Rangers, before bouncing back with a 1–0 win over KCB FC, courtesy of Ellie Asieche’s first-half strike.

The Slum Boys then held Tusker FC to a goalless draw but fell 2–1 to Kariobangi Sharks in the Slum Derby, with Asieche again scoring their consolation.

Their scheduled clash against Shabana FC in Kisii was postponed following the Football Kenya Federation’s directive to suspend all league fixtures in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

As part of their build-up to the upcoming fixture against former champions Gor Mahia on Saturday, Mathare played a friendly against Tusker at Ruaraka, narrowly losing 1–0 to a Douglas Omanga goal.

Despite the defeat, the team took several positives from the outing, particularly the return of key players Musa Masika, Fidel Otieno, and Boaz Maeri, who featured after lengthy injury layoffs.

Despite the result, there were plenty of positives, it marked the return to full fitness of Musa Masika, Fidel Otieno, and Boaz Maeri, who all got valuable minutes after lengthy spells on the sidelines,” the club noted in a statement.

Kago, who also served on the FC Talanta technical bench, reflected on his transition from player to coach, describing it as both challenging and rewarding.

It’s a journey moving from playing to coaching, it’s not easy because the responsibilities are very different,” he admitted.

However, the former winger revealed that his coaching ambitions began long before he retired.

I started doing courses earlier on while I was still playing,” he explained.
