Lavatsa, who starred for the record Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) champions between 2011 and 2013, told Mozzart Sport he expressed interest in the striker’s coaching position.

This came after the club announced vacancies following a sweeping overhaul of its technical bench.

The 21-time champions fired their entire backroom staff, including security personnel, after a rare trophyless season, the first in nine years.

“I was part of the applicants. I wanted to be the striker’s coach. Gor is a team that has given me so much. Being part of the technical bench and helping sharpen the forwards would be special,” he revealed.

The Kibera Black Stars assistant coach knows what it means to deliver for K'Ogalo.

He joined straight from Upper Hill Secondary School in 2011, making his debut at Nyayo National Stadium against Posta Rangers.

Lavatsa scored his first goal for the club in a 3-1 win over Thika United weeks later.

He helped K’Ogalo win the FKL Cup in 2011, the President’s Cup and Top 8 Cup in 2012, before capping his spell with a league and Super Cup double in 2013.

He later lifted the Algerian Cup with MC Algiers.

It hurts to see Gor Mahia go without a trophy. A club of this magnitude should always be competing for titles, the fans deserve better,” he said.

Capped twice by Harambee Stars, he says, local clubs must embrace specialised striker coaches, just as they do for goalkeepers, to address a glaring gap in player development.

We struggled to find a striker for CHAN. The talent is there, but players need the right training,” he added.

Whether Lavatsa gets the Gor Mahia role remains to be seen.

The club has since appointed former Ghana captain Charles Akonnor as head coach, with Kobi-Mensah Bismark as assistant.
