The former Kariobangi Sharks, Western Stima and Kisumu All Stars shot-stopper announced his exit through an emotional message shared on his Facebook page, expressing gratitude to the club and its supporters for the memorable journey they shared.

"Came in as a boy but left as a man. Saying goodbye is never easy, but I couldn't be more excited for your next adventure as a club. Thank you for the unforgettable memories and for being such a great home in the past seven years. The atmosphere may change, but our bond won't. All the best Mahia. A lot can be said, but I say adios Mayienga. And to the fans, you made me feel at home. Congratulations to you all," he posted.

Mathews joined K'Ogalo at the start of the 2019-2020 season from Kisumu All Stars and quickly established himself as one of the club's most reliable performers between the sticks.

His commanding presence, consistency and leadership saw him become the club's first-choice goalkeeper for several seasons.

The experienced custodian leaves Gor Mahia with an impressive trophy haul, having played a key role in the club's domestic success.

During his stay, he won three FKF Premier League titles, including the recently concluded 2025-2026 campaign that saw Gor Mahia extend their record league crown tally to 22.

Among his standout achievements was the 2022-2023 season when he claimed the FKF Premier League best goalkeeper award after keeping 17 clean sheets, sharing the accolade with Humphrey Katasi, who was then at Nzoia Sugar.

Mathews also etched his name into Gor Mahia folklore during the 2021 Mozzart Bet Cup final against AFC Leopards.

The soft-spoken goalkeeper emerged as the hero in the post-match penalty shootout, producing two crucial saves as K'Ogalo defeated their bitter rivals 4-1 on penalties to lift the trophy.

He capped off the tournament by winning the tournaments best shootstopper accolade.

His departure marks the end of an era for the club's goalkeeping department.

Gor Mahia have already moved to reinforce the position, bringing in Katasi from AFC Leopards and National Super League (NSL) 'Golden Glove' winner Michael Onyango ahead of the 2026-2027 season.

The duo will be tasked with filling the void left by Mathews as Gor Mahia prepare for a demanding campaign that includes defending the FKF Premier League title, competing in the Mozzart Bet Cup and representing Kenya in the CAF Champions League.
