Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, now a coach of Besiktas, fumed at his team's supporters following a Europa League 3-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt

Giovanni Van Bronckhorst faced a truly unpleasant experience on Thursday night, as his Besiktas suffered second Europa League defeat in a row, embellished with lots of booing from Turkish fans.

They are well known for creating intimidating atmospheres, and it was very tense in Istanbul as home fans booed their own players during the defeat.

Van Bronckhorst was baffled at the negative reaction, to put it politely.

He said: "If anyone thinks that we didn't give our best performance in the stadium today, that our players didn't give their best performance, they shouldn't come to the stadium again.

"Some of our players were booed. I can't understand it, I really can't, someone explain it to me. I've been in football for a long time; this has never happened to me," said the former Arsenal and Barcelona full-back.
