The club will now look to strengthen its squad in key areas as it targets a more competitive outing in the upcoming season.
Mathare United have confirmed the release of eight players as the FKF Premier League club begins restructuring its squad ahead of the 2025/26 season.
In an official communication posted on their Facebook page, the 2008 league champions announced that the players are departing following the expiry of their contracts.
The club equally thanked the individuals for their contributions and wished them well in their future endeavors.
Leading the list of departures is former AFC Leopards captain Eugene Mukangula. The experienced midfielder, who joined Mathare midway through last season on a short-term deal, exits after seeing out his contract.
Also leaving is left back Erickson Mulu, who was a regular starter. The former KCB man, who played both as an attacker and wingback, departs after completing his one-year stint. Reports indicate that Mulu is set to join coastal outfit Bandari FC.
In a notable decision, the club has parted ways with goalkeepers Steve Njunge and Michael Wanyika. Despite putting in impressive performances between the posts last season, both shot-stoppers will not be retained. Njunge had joined from Nairobi City Stars, while Wanyika arrived from Ulinzi Stars at the start of the campaign.
Others released include Daniel Odhiambo, previously with Kibera Black Stars; Starlon Odhiambo from Chamama FC; Henry Oballa; and Godfrey Rabar.
Complete list of released players:
Daniel Odhiambo, Starlon Odhiambo, Henry Oballa, Steve Njunge, Erickson Mulu, Godfrey Rabar, Eugene Mukangula, and Michael Wanyika.
Under head coach John Kamau, Mathare United marked their return to the top flight with a 10th-place finish, collecting 42 points from 10 wins, 12 draws, and 12 defeats.
The club will now look to strengthen its squad in key areas as it targets a more competitive outing in the upcoming season.
