The 2008 league champions came from a goal down to register their biggest win of the season, dealing a major blow to Ingwe’s title ambitions.

Mathare United head coach John Kamau believes AFC Leopards were fortunate to concede only four goals after his side thrashed them 4-1 in an FKF Premier League clash at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday, 14 March.

The 2008 league champions came from a goal down to register their biggest win of the season, dealing a major blow to Ingwe’s title ambitions.

Speaking after the emphatic victory, Kamau insisted the scoreline could have been much bigger had his players converted the many chances they created.

AFC Leopards are lucky. It was supposed to be 7-0 or 8-0 because we created a lot of scoring opportunities in the first half. At some point we got frustrated because we did not convert those chances,” Kamau said.

The tactician also praised his players for showing improvement compared to previous matches, particularly after lessons learned from their defeat to league leaders Gor Mahia.

“I am happy with the team because we have learned from our mistakes. Against Gor Mahia, we equalized and got excited, and we were punished. This time after equalizing, we were very cautious with what we were doing,” he added.

Leopards had taken the lead through Victor Omune, who finished off a cross from Ronald Sichenje to put Ingwe ahead just after the hour mark.

However, coach Fred Ambani’s side struggled to maintain control after going in front as Mathare mounted a late comeback.

Brian Ouru leveled the score in the 77th minute before completing his brace seven minutes later to turn the match around.

Isaac Omweri added the third goal before Ian Omondi sealed the rout with a fourth, capping a dramatic final 20-minute collapse for the Leopards.

The heavy defeat left sections of the Leopards' supporters furious, leading to chaotic scenes after the final whistle.

Fans confronted club officials and players on the pitch, forcing club chairman Boniface Ambani to step in and calm the situation as supporters demanded the sacking of the technical bench led by his brother.

Even after fans were cleared from the pitch, tensions persisted as some supporters briefly blocked players from accessing the tunnel to the changing rooms while threatening to pelt them with objects.

The incident put Ambani in another difficult position just weeks after he was forced to intervene during Leopards’ 5-1 win over Shabana when he pleaded with police to stop using tear gas on supporters during disturbances at the same venue.

The defeat leaves AFC Leopards second in the standings, seven points behind leaders Gor Mahia.

K’Ogalo could extend the gap to 10 points if they defeat Ulinzi Stars on Sunday at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

With fewer than 10 matches remaining in the season, the loss deals a major setback to the Leopards' hopes of ending their long wait for the league title.
