The Harambee Stars tactician has come under heavy criticism for not calling up the Gor Mahia striker in the team that did duty in recent friendlies
Coach Engin Firat has broken his silence in the middle of rising criticism over the omission of Gor Mahia striker Benson Omala from Harambee Stars in the squads that did duty in recent friendly matches.
Firat, who has faced harsh criticism for failing to include Omala in recent national team call-ups, spoke openly about his thoughts on the topic.
"I have some views on how a striker should play at an international level, and these are some of the things I have spoken to Omala about," the coach said at a press conference earlier today. "I have urged him not to get caught up in what others think, but to focus on himself, and he will be a vital member of the national team." He added.
The coach's comments imply that, while Omala has not been a member of recent squads, there is continued communication between the player and the coaching staff. Firat emphasised the value of constructive criticism and personal development for players who want to represent their country at the greatest level.
"We are working on professional football, not social media. If they don't tell Benson what he needs to improve on, they're not helping him at all," Firat said, emphasising the team's dedication to a professional approach to football development. This comment appears to be in response to significant outrage on social media platforms, as fans and analysts alike all expressed their displeasure at Omala's absence.
Firat's statements suggest that the coaching staff is actively working with Omala to enhance certain parts of his game. This shows a behind-the-scenes effort to develop the young striker into a player capable of making an impact at the international level.
Firat highlighted ball retention and build up play as some of the specific areas the Gor Mahia striker has to improve on.
Omala is in Harambee Stars' provisional squad that is currently in camp preparing to face Gabon and Seychelles in World Cup Qualifiers on 16th and 20th November in Franceville and Ivory Coast respectively.
