The legendary footballer spent a lot of time working as an assistant at various clubs, and now it’s time for something more serious

Former Barcelona and Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure is reportedly close to landing his first senior head coach role in European football, according to recent reports.

While Manchester City continue shaping their long-term structure ahead of the 2026/27 campaign under incoming manager Enzo Maresca and Sporting Director Hugo Viana, members of their iconic early-success core are increasingly stepping into coaching roles across Europe.

Yaya Toure’s path into management has been gradual rather than accelerated, as he built experience through several assistant and developmental positions, including spells at Olimpik Donetsk, Akhmat Grozny, Tottenham Hotspur’s academy, Standard Liege, and most recently as part of Roberto Mancini’s staff with the Saudi Arabia national team.

With clubs now putting the finishing touches on their preparations ahead of pre-season in July, the former midfield star is said to be on the verge of taking charge of a European first team. Journalist Matteo Moretto reports that Toure is “one step away” from being appointed head coach of Slovak side Slovan Bratislava.

A move to Bratislava would mark a major milestone in Toure’s coaching career, offering him a chance to prove himself at a club that dominates domestically and regularly competes in European qualifiers.

Slovan Bratislava, Slovakia’s most successful team, are preparing for another title defense and a push toward the 2026/27 Champions League qualifying rounds, providing a demanding yet promising platform for a managerial debut at the top level.

For Manchester City supporters, it adds another layer of interest to a summer already defined by transition at the club, as one of their most influential modern-era players edges closer to the start of his journey as a head coach.
