Jaffery Bukeya’s second-half strike made all the difference, sealing revenge for the Exodus, who had lost to Musingu in the county finals just weeks earlier.
The stands at Bukhungu were a sea of colour, with both sets of supporters raising their voices in a contest that at times seemed as fierce off the pitch as on it.
Scorpions’ faithful belted out chants of “Musingu! Scorpions!” every time their boys pressed forward, while the Exodus fans responded with rhythmic drumming and calls of “Butere! Exodus!” that rolled across the terraces.
On the pitch, the action matched the noise.
Butere’s striker Bukeya nearly silenced the Musingu crowd early on when he slipped behind the defense, but goalkeeper Boaz Mushira reacted sharply, diving low to block the shot.
The national champion with Highway, Mushira's gloves were tested several times, each save lifting Scorpions’ fans onto their feet in relief.
At the other end, Daniel Masakhwe was equally commanding in Butere’s goal.
Twice, he denied Hostin Olouch, first tipping over a dipping strike and later smothering a close-range effort after a clever pass from Marvin Ashiundu.
Musingu looked lethal from set-pieces, with Ashiundu and Harrison Amalemba, whipping in dangerous deliveries that had the Exodus backline scrambling.
Yet despite the quality of the balls, their forwards struggled to connect cleanly, leaving frustrated gasps from their fans.
Butere’s Collins Luvisia was a menace down the wings, his surging runs backed by thunderous cheers from the Exodus faithful.
Fredrick Oyonje and Dennis Shikule marshalled the Butere attack with calm authority but struggled to find a breakthrough
At the back, Ferdinand Isaac and his rearline were firm, cutting out Musingu’s quick transitions before they could blossom into clear chances.
As halftime loomed, the game grew tense.
Bukeya wasted the best chance of the half when he fired straight into Mushira’s gloves after being played through.
Moments later, Masakhwe was again the hero for Butere, punching away a swerving free-kick that seemed destined for the top corner.
When the whistle blew, both sets of supporters applauded their teams, one half gone, no goals scored, but plenty of fire and pride left in the contest.
Second half
The match began with the same intensity as the first half, both sides showing urgency and flair.
Butere struck just four minutes after the restart.
In the 49th minute, Bukeya, ever alert inside the box, pounced to slot home his second goal of the competition, sparking wild celebrations from the Exodus fans.
Dennis Kikwae continued to torment Musingu’s defence with his runs, and the Exodus nearly doubled their lead moments later.
A quick release from goalkeeper Masakhwe set up a 3v2 break, but Collins Luvisia’s final touch let him down, allowing Annan Okumu to intercept.
Musingu responded with intent almost immediately
From the 63rd minute, they camped in Butere’s final third, piling wave after wave of pressure.
Yet, for all their possession, the Scorpions lacked the cutting edge to break down Butere’s disciplined backline.
Tempers began to flare as frustration grew along with the game
Kelvin Mukaramoja, at one moment, confronted the Tanzanian centre referee and was promptly booked, earning him his first yellow card of the game.
The introduction of Kelvin Manani breathed life into Musingu’s attack, his energy unsettling Butere’s defence.
But Exodus stood firm, nearly adding a second when Oyonje whipped in a dangerous cross that Kikwae narrowly failed to meet with a glancing header in the 68th minute.
Time began to slip away, and Butere resorted to game management.
Their goalkeeper, Masakhwe, proved a thorn in the flesh for Musingu supporters, using every trick in the book to slow down play, antics that eventually earned him a yellow card.
With Musingu unable to find a breakthrough, Butere dropped deep to protect their slender lead.
When the final whistle blew, Exodus fans spilt onto the pitch in a joyous celebration, their chants echoing around Bukhungu as Musingu players sank in disappointment.
The win lifted Butere to five points from three matches, having drawn their opening two games.
For Musingu, the loss left them with one win and one defeat, though still with a game in hand to keep their semifinal hopes alive.
At the same venue earlier on, Kenyan champions St Joseph’s Boys High School, Kitale, kick-started their competition with a 6-0 evisceration of EPM Mpande of Burundi.
