Earlier in the day, Butere Boys were held to a 1-1 draw by Ugandan champions Buddo SS

Musingu High School’s football team, the Scorpions, are Ksh100,000 richer after edging Kizuka 1-0 in their opening Group A match at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.

Kelvin Mukaramoja was the hero, striking in the 45th minute to settle a hotly contested tie.

The win meant the Scorpions redeemed the Ksh 100,000 pledge made by Kakamega County Senator Boniface Khalwale, an alumnus of the school, who had privately told the players before kick-off that each victory would come with a cash prize, a detail exclusively learned by Mozzart Sport.

The three points put Musingu in a strong position to advance from their group, level on points with Bukedea Comprehensive Academy and Agai High School, while Butere Boys trail with two points.

The Scorpions began the match with urgency, almost scoring in the opening minute when Shiritu Benson burst down the right flank and squared the ball into the box, only for it to land safely in the gloves of Kizuka goalkeeper Epimaric Mwanaziwa.

The Tanzanians almost responded instantly, when Ally Musa rattled the bar in the second minute after latching onto a long ball and beating the defenders.

Musingu quickly regained control, weaving short passes and finding spaces.

In the fourth minute, Houstin Oluoch came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock, his effort crashing off the crossbar before the rebound was cleared for a corner.

Kizuka threatened again in the eighth minute, but Hussein Kinamezo’s shot from the edge of the box drifted wide.

Meanwhile, a select group of fans circled the stands, dancing to the beat of Isukuti drums, while hundreds more roared chants of “Scorpions” from the terraces.

On the pitch, Musingu dominated possession, with Kizuka content to sit back and counter.

Both sides struggled to breach the final third as the match settled into a midfield battle.

In the 18th minute, Ashiundu Marvin mistimed his run on a promising through-ball, allowing the Kizuka keeper to gather.

Missed chances at one end were quickly followed by counterattacks at the other, keeping the contest lively.

Play was halted in the 25th minute when the Kizuka goalkeeper Epimaric Mwanaziwa sustained an injury, resulting in a five-minute stoppage.

The tempo slowed after the restart, contrary to the electric start, but as the half wore on, Musingu grew more dominant.

Amalemba Harrison made a surging run through midfield, dribbling past two defenders, but his final pass went astray in the 40th minute.

Just before halftime, Musingu finally found the breakthrough.

Mukaramoja pounced from close range after excellent work down the left flank, sending the Scorpions into the break with the lead.

The second half picked up with the same attacking intent from Musingu.

Mukaramoja, Ashiundu, and Amalemba all found themselves in promising positions during the opening ten minutes, but their finishing let them down.

In the 56th minute, three consecutive corners kept Kizuka under siege but yielded no goal.

Moments later, Kelvin Manani broke free for a one-on-one with Mwanaziwa, only for the keeper to come out on top.

He repeated the feat minutes later against Ashiundu, frustrating the Scorpions once again.

Kizuka’s first real opportunity of the half came in the 65th minute when poor defending allowed Efeso Mwenda a one-on-one with Boaz Mushiri, but his shot sailed over.

Musingu kept dictating play, and in the 78th minute, Manani won a free-kick just outside the penalty area.

His delivery narrowly missed captain Annan Okumu, who had leapt highest to meet it.

Despite creating numerous chances, Musingu could not add to their tally, with Mwanaziwa earning plaudits for keeping Kizuka in the game.

The Tanzanians nearly snatched a point late on when awarded an indirect penalty, but Yasin Musimi smashed it straight into the wall, and that proved the final act of the match.

Butere 1-1 Buddo SS

Earlier in the day, Butere Boys were held to a 1-1 draw by Ugandan champions Buddo SS.

Jaffary Bukeya had given Butere the lead in the fifth minute before Olala Rafael equalised late in the second half.

Elsewhere, Agai High School also made history, registering their first-ever win in FEASSSA competition with a 2-0 victory over AP Rugunda of Rwanda.

St Joseph’s are set to kick off their campaign on Saturday.
