The 2025 debutants earned their place on the regional stage as Kakamega County champions, and by virtue of Kakamega hosting this year’s tournament.
Although they missed the national championships, Bousted Mukolwe’s side seized their chance to “sit at the high table” and battle the best in the region.
Their maiden appearance ended in a barren draw against Tanzania’s Kizuka Secondary School in a match staged at Kakamega High School's Outer Field.
A delayed and somewhat chaotic kick-off did little to dampen the mood. Alongside Butere Girls’ fixture, the match drew fans back into the stadium.
By kick-off, hundreds had filled the venue, draped in the school's colours and armed with songs of gadaa, ferried in by the school to witness the historic moment.
The Tanzanian champions arrived in stark contrast, calm, quiet, and focused, stepping onto the pitch with balls at their feet for a low-key warm-up.
Once the whistle went, it was clear the crowd was in for a spectacle.
Butere’s right-back, Duncan Meki, caused constant problems down the flank, whipping in dangerous crosses that went unanswered.
The first real opening came in the 18th minute when winger Collins Luvai burst down the left flank, beating his marker before delivering a low cross into the six-yard box.
Ferdinand Isaac was inches away from turning it in, only for a Kizuka defender to clear under pressure.
In the 27th minute, Luvai was at it again, this time floating in a high ball that found striker Dennis Kikwe unmarked. However, Kikwe mistimed his header, sending it over the bar from close range.
Butere’s best chance of the game came in the 63rd minute. Substitute Dennis Shikule latched onto a through ball inside the box but, with only the goalkeeper to beat, dragged his shot wide of the far post to the groans of the home crowd.
After a tense 90 minutes, both sides settled for a point apiece to open their campaigns.
Speaking after the match, coach Mukolwe said the game was a valuable learning experience.
“The boys had stage fright because it’s their first time here, but we’ll talk to them and come back stronger,” he told Mozzart Sport.
“Tactically, there’s no problem; it’s more mental, and we’ll fix that today. We don’t fear any big side.
God gave us the East Africa stage; we know what’s expected. Let the big boys come, we’re ready for them.”
Amus College 0-1 Buddo Secondary
Elsewhere, reigning champions Amus College began their title defence on the wrong foot, falling 1-0 to Buddo Secondary School at the Kakamega Rehabilitation Centre.
In another Group B clash, Bukedea Comprehensive stunned last year’s runners-up St Mary’s Kitende 2-1, with Dennis Ssewagude and Patrick Ssebkusu scoring for Bukedea and Dennis Kisiriko pulling one back for Kitende.
Kenyan sides Musingu High School, Highway Secondary School, Agai High School, and St Joseph’s Boys High School did not play after their Rwandan opponents, who arrived in Kenya on Wednesday night, requested a day to rest.
Action resumes Friday across Bukhungu Stadium, Mukumu High School, Musingu High School, Kakamega Rehabilitation Centre, Kakamega Prison Grounds, and Kakamega High School.
