The experienced shot-stopper signed his contract on Saturday night, officially becoming a Saint just six months after rejoining Bandari from KCB FC. Shikalo, who previously turned out for Tanzanian heavyweights Yanga after the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, credited his recent exploits at the CHAN tournament for paving the way for the move.
“Every player dreams of playing abroad for a big team that competes for top honours and takes good care of its players. I am very happy this move has finally materialized, and I can’t wait to link up with my new teammates after the international break,” he said.
Shikalo highlighted the importance of CHAN, noting that the competition offered Kenyan players vital exposure. “This is all down to CHAN. The tournament gave us a good spotlight, and it’s great to see it opening doors for some of us. The experience gained abroad will be crucial when representing the national team in the future.”
Currently, South Africa–based duo Ian Otieno and Brian Bwire are the only other Kenyan goalkeepers plying their trade outside the country, a fact that makes Shikalo’s move even more significant.
“We don’t have many keepers abroad, and that’s an area we need to improve. I’m proud to be among the few carrying that flag and I hope more Kenyan goalkeepers will get opportunities outside. It will increase competition for national team selection, which ultimately benefits the country.”
The 28-year-old also had glowing words for Bandari, admitting that leaving the coastal outfit was not easy.
“I will certainly miss Bandari because the whole group was like a family to me. They welcomed me back earlier this year, and leaving wasn’t an easy decision. I will forever be indebted to them. I thank the management, players, technical bench, and support staff for their role in my journey, and I wish them the very best.”
Shikalo now becomes the second Kenyan goalkeeper to feature for St. George after former Harambee Stars custodian Patrick Matasi.
