The Welsh club have been long-term admirers of the 28-year-old and had a seven-figure bid rejected last summer as they prepared for their Championship campaign.
Bristol City have been trying to tie down the influential defender to a new deal in recent months, as first reported by SportsBoom, but talks over improved terms are understood to have stalled.
With Vyner now in the final six months of his contract at Ashton Gate, several Championship clubs have been monitoring his situation.
It is understood that Wrexham are now leading the race, which also includes Birmingham City, as the transfer window enters its final days.
Phil Parkinson’s side created space in their squad earlier this week by allowing Conor Coady to join Charlton Athletic on loan, paving the way for Vyner’s arrival as a replacement.

Sources have told Mozzart Sport that the fee being discussed is below the seven-figure offer that was rejected in the summer, with City keen to avoid losing one of their academy graduates for free at the end of the season.
The Robins had hoped Vyner would commit his future if they remained in the playoff hunt, but negotiations have failed to reach a breakthrough.
Bristol City currently sit just one point behind sixth-placed Wrexham, but the defender is believed to see a clearer route to Premier League football with the Welsh club, whose ambition has been clear since their promotion.
The move would end a 12-year journey for Vyner, who joined Bristol City at the age of seven and rose through the academy alongside goalkeeper Max O’Leary.
He has gone on to make over 250 appearances for the club, becoming one of their most reliable and consistent performers.
It has been a difficult transfer window for City supporters, who have already seen last season’s top scorer, Anis Mehmeti, sold to promotion-chasing Ipswich Town.
However, there is optimism that the club will finally complete a loan move for Middlesbrough winger Delano Burgzorg after two previous failed attempts.
Only four Championship clubs have conceded fewer goals than Bristol City this season, with even the league leaders letting in more, highlighting the importance of Vyner’s contribution to the club’s defensive solidity and showing what a significant loss his departure would represent.
