The experienced midfielder is currently unattached after parting ways with reigning FKF Premier League champions Kenya Police, a club he joined at the start of the 2023-2024 season.
Sources close to the Batoto ba Mungu camp say talks have progressed well and a deal could be concluded before the transfer window closes.
A Sofapaka official told Mozzart Sport that the club is keen on reinforcing its squad ahead of the second phase of the season as they seek a stronger push in the league standings.
“Duncan Otieno is coming. Very soon he will be part of us. The team wants to strengthen in every department for the second phase of the season,” the source revealed.
Sofapaka have already made a statement of intent in the window by securing the services of former AFC Leopards captain Clifton Miheso, with more arrivals expected in the coming days as the club revitalises its squad.
Before his stint with Kenya Police FC, Otieno was on the books of Botswana giants Gaborone United, whom he joined in August 2022 after switching from Zambia Super League side Lusaka Dynamos.
He later left Gaborone United by mutual consent and returned to Kenya, where he rejoined Police FC.
Otieno initially played a key role at Kenya Police alongside fellow Kenya international John Mark Makwata, but his involvement gradually reduced before the two parties eventually agreed to part ways.
The midfielder boasts a wealth of top-flight experience, having enjoyed two spells with AFC Leopards.
His first stint came between 2014 and 2015, during which he made 20 league appearances and scored once.
He returned for a second spell from 2017 to 2018, featuring 59 times for Ingwe after a brief period with Posta Rangers.
Otieno later moved abroad, signing for Nkana FC in Zambia, where he spent one season before earning a transfer to Lusaka Dynamos, further enhancing his profile as one of the most travelled Kenyan midfielders of his generation.
Sofapaka are also assessing several other players as they fine-tune their squad.
KCB FC winger Tyron Kariuki is currently training with the club as he seeks to earn a permanent deal, while Soy United goalkeeper Brian Shem Marani is also close to linking up with the 2009 league champions.
In addition, released Mathare United forward Meshack Ochieno, former Nairobi United defender Isaac Ouma, and Iraqi winger Ali Huzaif are among the players lined up as Sofapaka continue to cast their net wide in the ongoing transfer window.
With experience, depth and balance clearly the priority, Sofapaka appear determined to ensure they emerge from the second leg of the season as a far more competitive outfit.
