Every point is crucial for Mikel Arteta’s side in the title race, and they are welcoming the Cherries, who are coming in with five consecutive draws
Arsenal return to Premier League duties this afternoon as they host Bournemouth, knowing a victory could extend their lead at the summit to a commanding 12 points.
Mikel Arteta’s side have hardly had a quiet spell around the international break. Their domestic cup campaigns ended in frustration—first with defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final, followed by a 2–1 loss at Southampton in the FA Cup quarterfinals. However, they responded in style on the European stage, edging Sporting CP 1–0 away from home.

It wasn’t a dominant display in terms of possession, and David Raya had to come up with a couple of crucial saves, but winning in Lisbon is never straightforward. Sporting hadn’t tasted defeat at home since August, which underlines the significance of Arsenal’s result.
Attention now shifts back to the league, where Arsenal have the opportunity to tighten their grip on first place before City face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
That said, this early kickoff against Bournemouth won’t be straightforward. The Cherries have been in solid form, unbeaten since their narrow 3–2 loss to Arsenal in the reverse fixture on January 3.
While Arsenal looked to have taken a decisive step toward ending their long wait for a league title after beating Everton—combined with City dropping points at West Ham—recent cup setbacks have introduced a sense of uncertainty. Even with a nine-point cushion, the pressure is very much on.
The hard-fought win in Portugal may have lifted spirits, but there’s likely to be tension at the Emirates when Bournemouth arrive. With the second leg against Sporting looming, squad management becomes crucial.
Arteta is expected to shuffle his lineup, balancing freshness with stability. Key figures like Raya, William Saliba, and Declan Rice should keep their places, while others such as Gabriel, Martin Zubimendi, and Viktor Gyokeres could be rested ahead of Wednesday. Mikel Merino remains sidelined following foot surgery earlier this year, and both Eberechi Eze and Piero Hincapie are dealing with injury issues.
Speaking ahead of the clash, Arteta emphasized the importance of the occasion: "The closer we get, the relevance and importance of the match increases obviously, and tomorrow is a big day for us. The players know it, our supporters know it. It's an early kick-off, so get up early, have an early breakfast, bring your lunch, bring your dinner, and let's go all together for it because it has to be a big day."
