Eric Johana joins Thai side Muangthong United

The former Mathare United midfielder was previously attached to Belgian side Waasland-Beveren

Kenyan international Eric Johana has joined four-time Thailand champions Muangthong United.

Johana had been a free agent for a couple of weeks after leaving Belgian second tier side Waasland-Beveren following the expiry of his short-term deal.

The 27-year old had joined Beveren in January from Swedish side Jonkopings Sodra who let him go after running his two-year long contract out.

The versatile midfielder’s search for a new home landed him in Thailand where he penned a deal with Muangthong, becoming the second Kenyan to grace the Thai League 1 in recent times after Ayub Timbe who is attached to champions, Buriram United.

Timbe, another Harambee Stars player joined Buriram in December 2021, four months after parting company with Japanese side Vissel Kobe.

Speakimg upon sealing the deal, the former Mathare United man promised to add spark in the quest to reclaim the league title that is in Buriram’s custody.

It is a special feeling for to join a club with so much history in Thailand. I just want to be part of the project. I have been following the club and want to be part of this team going forward. I bring different quality and chip in with goals and assists. I promise the fans to give everything to get this club back to the top,” he told the club media.

Muangthong United football club was founded in 1989. At first the team played in lower division football leagues in Thailand. In 2002 the club made it to Division Two.

In 2007 the team according to their website finished first in Division Two and thus, earned promotion to the next tier. The club was promoted to the top league in 2009
