The Uruguay international’s exceptional form earned him another year at Old Trafford

El Matador signs on! Edinson Cavani has agreed to extend his Manchester United contract and remain in England for at least one more season. According to reports from Fabrizio Romano, the former Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain striker has bought himself 12 more months with a strong goalscoring run in recent weeks.

Cavani has scored eight goals in the last month over seven games. It’s already an impressive tally, but it gets even better if you consider that he’s only played the full 90 minutes in two of those matches – and had just a four-minute cameo appearance in his team’s goalless draw at Leeds. Over this fruitful period, Cavani was averaging a goal every 48 minutes, which is a fantastic return for the 34-year-old attacker.

No official confirmation has arrived, but Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer has spoken at length in recent months about trying to convince Cavani to extend his stay at Old Trafford. It is claimed Boca Juniors were offering a two-year contract, but Cavani decided to stay in Europe. The striker's new contract will run until June 2022 and he will decide his future at the end of next season.

It’s good news for Manchester United, who will go into the new season safe in the knowledge that there is going to be an experienced striker to aid the promising youngsters in their search for prolificity in front of the goal. Despite being linked to a big-money move for Tottenham’s England star Harry Kane, as well as Dortmund’s Erling Braut Haaland, but with no deal secured yet – having El Matador around the dressing room will be more than welcome.

Cavani has scored 15 goals in 35 appearances this season and has five off the bench in the Premier League, equalling the club record for most in a season set by current manager Solskjaer and Javier Hernandez.
