Barcelona president is furious with player's agent, a former Barca footballer
President Joan Laporta did not hide his disappointment over the departure of young La Masia talent Dro Fernandez, who left FC Barcelona this January and moved to Paris Saint-Germain. Fernandez went through the entire youth academy of the Catalan club, then got his chance with the B team, and even made his debut for the first team. However, at the end of January he decided to change clubs, which surprised many in Barcelona, especially people inside the club. The Parisians paid around eight million euros for the young player’s freedom, believing they had secured a footballer who could become a major star in the future. Laporta spoke very emotionally about the whole situation and did not hide that the young player’s departure hurt him. However, most of his frustration was directed at the player’s agent, former FC Barcelona midfielder Ivan de la Pena.
Interestingly, De la Pena spent the longest period of his career wearing the shirt of city rivals RCD Espanyol, where he played for nine seasons. Laporta was critical of him and compared him to the famous agent Jorge Mendes.
“With Mendes we've kept Lamine Yamal and we haven't had the same thing happen as with De la Pena, where Dro went to PSG because of him. If Mendes had had Dro, this wouldn't have happened... these backstabbing tactics... This has been a disgrace and a backstabbing,” Laporta said during an interview for the show Jijantes.
The Barcelona president, who plans to run for another mandate at the head of the club, particularly criticizes De la Pena for the fact that, as a former Barcelona player with more than 100 appearances for the first team, he took part in a transfer that the club experienced as a serious blow. He also talked about refereeing decisions and Real Madrid’s TV.
"We need a strong team to compete against refereeing decisions. That's why we've built a young and uninhibited squad. We're top of La Liga and we've been unfairly maligned. The Real Madrid TV coverage is a disgrace" he stated.
